Look out, Vidalia. There’s a brand-new onion in the South, and it’s poised to give those sweet Georgia bulbs some stiff competition. Grown in St. Matthews, South Carolina, the Low Country Sweet Onion comes courtesy of Luther Wannamaker, a multi-generational farmer and owner of L.B. Wannamaker Seed Company. His family has long been associated with farming firsts in the state, and after tasting a batch of these new onions, we’re ready to declare them a sweet success.
The handpicked onions are currently grown on just two and a half acres, and you won’t find them in stores at the moment. But you can get a box delivered. Try them baked, sautéed, fried, or even microwaved (Wannamaker’s personal recommendation). Of course, these onions are plenty mild to just chop up and eat raw if you’re so inclined. An added plus: no tears.
