Billy Reid on Bourbon…plus a bourbon cocktail recipe

Received an email from Southern designer, Billy Reid (www.billyreid.com) this afternoon which caught my attention about a small batch sour mash bourbon I wasn’t familiar with-Black Maple Hill…will let you know when I find out more about it-hopefully after tasting some!

Also came a across a bourbon cocktail that I will definitely be concocting @ some point this week: the Regal Ransom (created for the Kentucky Derby this year after one of the top contenders)-

Regal Ransom

2 oz. bourbon

1 oz. honey-tea pear syrup (recipe follows)

juice of 1/2 lemon

Pour ingredients into a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake vigorously then strain into a martini glass.

Honey-Tea Pear Syrup

3/4 cup water

3/4 cup honey

1 pear, chopped

1 black tea bag (hear Earl Grey works great)

Cook water, honey and pears together in a pot. When it comes to a boil, turn off and steep tea bag in the mixture for five minutes. Pour in container and refrigerate until needed. When used in a cocktail, strain out the pears. Maybe enjoy the reserved pears with some ice cream (vanilla bean with sweet tea caramel sauce, perhaps?)
